Farming Forum - Darlington Rugby Club

Following on from the success of the last forum meeting, we are please to welcome you to the March forum. We aim to hold the forum events at least three times a year. Details of the speakers and topics which will be covered are listed below.

The aim of the evening is to give you a useful technical presentation that will have a direct application to arable farming businesses.  

The event will again be held at:

The format of the evening is that there will be a 20 minute round up of relevant industry news, followed by two short presentations, with question time afterwards. We hope you enjoy what promises to be an informative evening, which will be followed by a pie and pea supper at around 7.30pm.

Speakers:

Philip Cain - Newcastle University 

Topic: Choosing Profitable Crops
Philip Cain is Farms Director and senior lecturer in farm business management at Newcastle University. After graduating from Newcastle in the late 1970s Philip spent about 15 years as a working farm manager on a number of mixed farms in the Midlands before returning to Newcastle to develop the degree in Farm Business Management. He took on the directorship of the University's farms in 1997 and these now comprise about 800ha of mixed farming in two units with about 400 dairy cows, 800 breeding ewes, a breeding sow unit and 400 ha of combinable crops. His research interests centre on the effect on farm profit of changes in farm policy, markets and technology.

Jessica Card - George F White

Topic: CAP Reforms 2013 - Deja Vu Or Something New
A key member of the George F White Wolsingham Team, Chartered Surveyor Jessica manages the Durham Single Payment Scheme application portfolio, alongside completion of specialist valuation and agency work. Jessica also is part of the George F White CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) Group, working on extracting the latest developments from Europe and translating into practical advice for UK Farmers.
