Country School Chums Land The Perfect Job
In these days of redundancies and belt tightening, one local firm that is bucking the trend and seeing its work force increase year on year, is Alnwick based George F White Chartered Surveyors, who now employ over 100 people.
Charlotte Rogerson from Biddlestone Edge near Alwinton and Rob Thompson from Broxfield Farm, Denwick were in the same class at King Edward VI School, Morpeth. They then both went on to study for degrees in Rural Enterprise and Land Management at renowned Harper Adams University in Shropshire.
Now Charlotte and Rob have both landed their dream jobs back on their home patch in rural Northumberland, although neither knew the other was applying.
Charlotte (24) grew up on the family farm near Alwinton and always wanted a job based in the country. On graduating she joined Buccleuch Estates as a graduate land agent, learning the ropes on an 86,000 acre estate and passing the rigorous Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to gain membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Charlotte is now working as a Rural Practice Surveyor for George F White.
She says: ‘George F White provides an excellent, young, go-ahead environment and I’m working with some very focussed, impressive and knowledgeable people. Because the firm offers many different services to farmers and landowners, from strategic business management to landlord tenant, planning, renewables, mining rights, expert witness and more, I am learning so much about the different aspects of rural chartered surveying and my work is constantly offering me new challenges – which is exactly what I was looking for.’
Rob (23) who grew up on the family farm near Alnwick, is now a Rural Business Consultant for George F White and is working towards RICS membership. He is delighted to have secured this excellent job back on his home turf and he is working across the enterprises, currently putting his studies to good use in farm cash flow planning, applying for grants on behalf of farm businesses and appraising rural businesses.
He says: ‘George F White is the best there is so it was always my goal to work for the company. Having lived and worked on farms all my life I know that the right business planning is crucial to success. Now that I’ve studied rural enterprise and land management in depth as well having hands-on experience, it’s great to be able to put it all into practice and see how other rural businesses thrive as a result. I’m enjoying working amongst a stimulating team of people who are very dynamic and are always bang up to date with the latest policies and legislation.’
Hugh Fell, Managing Partner at George F White says: ‘We pride ourselves on the excellent career opportunities we offer our staff and always encourage and support individuals to reach their full potential so we can offer the best level of expertise to our clients. Charlotte and Rob are typical of the young talent we take on at George F White – highly qualified, bright, switched on and personable. What’s more they’ve both been born and brought up in the Northumberland countryside and so know the area and its people well. They will be a great asset to our team.’
