Little Otchan Shepherd Hut Wins Farm Diversification Award at The Driffield Show 2016
Little Otchan Shepherd Hut was announced the winner of the 2016 Farm Diversification Award at yesterday’s Driffield Show.
George F. White, in association with Driffield Agricultural Society, was pleased to present the owner, Jonathan Hodgson, with a £500 cash prize and engraved silver salver as part of the accolade.
Little Otchan Shepherd Hut, based in the East Yorkshire countryside, is a working 720 acre mixed farm producing high welfare pork, wheat for biscuit flour, bread crumbs and bio fuels, vining peas and malting barley for its brewery, that has diversified to provide a five star glamping experience for visitors. Perfectly hidden away in beautiful surroundings, Little Otchan Shepard Hut provides a truly idyllic break.
Jonathan Hodgson, who diversified his farm in 2015, said: “I am over the moon to win this year’s Diversification Award. Establishing Little Otchan Shepard Hut was just one little idea I had – I never thought it would take off so much! We have had so much interest, come rain or shine, it’s been amazing. I really appreciate all the great visitor reviews and I hope we can continue to provide a luxury getaway for friends and families across the UK.”
The Hodgson family are fourth generation farmers who have lived on and worked the land since the 1920s. Over that time, they have seen many changes no more so than in 2008 when they opened their very own brewery on the farm. Using their own malting barley, they produce award winning beers sold throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. The Little Otchan Hut takes its name from one of their best-selling beers – Pricky Back Otchan – which they’ve produced for nearly a decade.
Simon Britton, Partner at George F. White, added: “We were very impressed by what Little Otchan Shepherd Hut had to offer and the five star visitor experience that is guaranteed from arrival. It provides a very unique and distinctive glamping getaway in the most amazing and serene location. Those who stay receive all the luxuries that they would as if they were in a five star hotel but with a feeling of ‘getting away from it all’ to enjoy some down time and recharge the batteries with nature in the countryside. It is my absolute pleasure to present them with this award.”
