The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has recently published a new National Design Guide, along with an update to the Planning Practice Guidance (PPG) about ‘good design’. This follows on from the Government’s stronger emphasis on design in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in 2018. Indications are that this will be supplemented by a National Design Code later this year.
The Guide sets out 10 characteristics of well-designed places to demonstrate what good design can mean in practice. Councils that have not produced their own local design guides can use the new National Design Guide and the forthcoming National Design Code when considering whether to approve development proposals. The NPPF (130) indicates developments of poor design should be refused where they fail to improve the character and quality of an area. With a strong Architectural and Planning Team George F. A leading North Yorkshire School has begun work on four new classrooms as a ground-breaking ceremony officially opened the site.
Cundall Manor School, based between Thirsk and Ripon, has started the first stage of a 10-year development programme following yesterday’s site opening by the school’s governors, Head Teachers and development partners.
Working with land, property and business consultancy George F. White, who are project managing Cundall Manor’s development from conception to completion, the school was able to successfully secure planning permission from Harrogate Borough Council to build a single storey extension to the Upper School to accommodate four new state-of-the-art classrooms.
Talking about the project, Hunter Hardy, Head of the Architectural Team at George F. White, said: “Our planning and architectural teams joined forces to gain planning consent from the local council on behalf of Cundall Manor so that it could expand and complete the first phase of its long-term development plan. We appointed contractor Tom Willoughby to build, who is following our strategic direction and design concept for the classrooms, constructing exactly what the school desires.”
The classrooms will be home to the school’s flourishing English and drama department.

From six finalists the Newport Street Gallery in London, built to house the private art collection of artist Damien Hirst, has won the RIBA Stirling Prize, the UK’s leading architecture award.
The project involved the remodelling of three listed Victorian industrial buildings and the construction of two new ones. The architectural practice behind the scheme, Caruso St John, were also shortlisted for the prize in both 2000 and 2006.
The Stirling Prize judges called their work “a bold and confident contribution to the best of UK architecture” and went on to comment “Caruso St John’s approach to conservation is irreverent yet sensitive and achieves a clever solution that expresses a poetic juxtaposition of old and new”.
