Moorland Energy, a Yorkshire oil and gas exploration and production company are to lay a new pipeline and construct a gas processing facility close to the village of Thornton-le-Dale near Pickering, North Yorkshire.

The controversial scheme, expected to cost around £50 million was granted planning permission in June this year after being referred by appeal to the Secretary of State for the Department of Communities and Local Government, Mr Eric Pickles after North Yorkshire County Council had failed to make a decision on the application.

The facility will extract, process and supply gas into the National Transmission System, the UK’s main gas pipeline, from the well site at Ebberston and is expect to supply gas to more than 75,000 homes. It is anticipated the plant will operate for around 20 years and create 25 permanent jobs. The annual value of the gas will be approximately £37.5m at current prices.

With any project of this type, local landowners can be affected by compulsory purchase of their land. Compulsory purchase is when the government, council or a utility company has the legal right to buy or take rights over private property.
